Forts and Palaces in Delhi

Once the seat of prowess of a cogent civilisation, the impressive forts in Delhi today stand as a silent sentinal to the erstwhile glory of the mighty emperors who have reigned its red soil. Some are built in red sandstone, whereas some frown down ominously like some Gothic palace; but still they carry an impressive aroma of chivalry along with themselves on the passage of time. Each fort marks the dawn of a new capital, and portrays the desire of establishing a new kingdom that never saw a rising sun. The Tourism Department has taken enough care to preserve these archaic monuments, and today you can see them shinning in their past grandeur. Come experience a royalty, a sense of immense power you might have never experienced before.

Many Facets of Power

The Red Fort, set amidst the bustling heart of Old Delhi is the most renowned fort of India that also carves a niche in the list of wonders of the world. After Mughal Emperor Shahjahan shifted his capital to the royal quarters of Delhi, this colossal fort sprouted from the heart of his new city, Shahjahanabad. It is the place that was once a pride of the robust Mughals. Each evening a light-and-sound-show recreates the famous events of Delhi's history. Today the fort is adorned in a typically Indian demeanour with hoardes of trained guides leaping forth to offer their cordiality as soon as you enter. The ancient city of Delhi is wrapped in legends so much so that the Purana Quila is said to be nestling on the ruins of the princely state of Indraprastha, the original city of Delhi of Mahabharata fame. Although the construction was started by Humayun, the Afgan ruler, Sher Shah - who briefly punctured the Mughal reign by defeating Humayun - completed it during his raj during 1538-45, before Humayun regained control of India. Don't forget to enjoy a memorable boat ride on the emerald waters of the Purana Qila moat with your loved ones. Although it's little more than a large, stagnant pool, the pedal boats here are a popular source of entertainment among Delhites.
